Sunroof glass is tempered, sits in a moving frame, and is the one panel on the car that is expected to be watertight while sliding. Replacing it is as much about the seal, the track and the drains as it is about the glass.
Broken Panels, Failed Seals and Blocked Drains
Sunroofs come to us broken by debris, cracked from stress, or leaking. A leak is very often not the glass at all — it is a blocked drain tube letting water back up into the headliner. Diagnosing that before replacing anything saves you the cost of a panel you did not need.
Spontaneous Breakage
Tempered glass can fail from an impact you never noticed or from stress at the edge of the panel, which is why a sunroof sometimes lets go with a bang and no obvious cause. It is unsettling and it is not unusual.
Clearing the Track and the Headliner
Fragments drop into the track, the drain channels and the gap above the headliner. A panel fitted over glass still sitting in the track will bind, and the drains will block again. Clearing it out first is the job.

My sunroof leaks but the glass looks fine — do I need new glass?
Very often no. The most common cause is a blocked drain tube letting water back up into the headliner rather than a failed panel. We would rather find that first than sell you glass you do not need.
My sunroof shattered with no impact. How?
Tempered glass can fail from stress at the edge of the panel or from an impact too small to notice at the time. It is startling but it is a known behaviour of tempered glass.
Is sunroof glass covered by insurance?
It falls under comprehensive coverage like other glass damage. We bill your carrier directly and you pay your comprehensive deductible.
Can a sunroof be replaced mobile?
Sometimes, but sunroof work often goes better in the shop because the track and drains need clearing and the panel has to be aligned to seal. We will tell you which we recommend for your vehicle.
